The Defeat of Satan

According to Scripture, Satan was destined to soon be crushed and cast into the lake of fire (Romans 16:20; Revelation 20:10). Historical events suggest this prophecy was fulfilled around 79-80 AD, when Mount Vesuvius erupted, and a subsequent fire destroyed many of Rome’s Satanic temples. At the same time, many Romans began to believe their gods no longer existed.

Despite this, stories of paranormal and demonic activity have persisted throughout history. From sinful temptations to claims of demonic possession, much of this is still attributed to Satan’s influence. This raises questions: Was Satan’s defeat not final? Is he still active in some limited way, tormented but with restricted access to the world? Or perhaps Satan was destroyed, but demons continue to act on his behalf?

A closer examination of Scripture reveals that Satan and his angels were completely and finally destroyed in the lake of fire. This leaves no room for their ongoing influence and challenges us to consider alternative explanations for these mysterious occurrences.

The Extent of Satan’s Defeat

Throughout the scripture, Satan’s defeat is described as final and complete. The terms “crushed,” “destroyed,” “abolished,” “killed,” “die,” “burned to ashes,” and “no longer exist” do not allow the devil to have continued influence after this defeat.

Romans 16:20 (BSB) The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

Genesis 3:15 (BSB) And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

Christ would “destroy” the works of the devil and “abolish” his rule and power.

1 John 3:8 (WEB) To this end the Son of God was revealed: that he might destroy the works of the devil.

1 Corinthians 15:24-25 (WEB) Then the end comes, when he will deliver up the Kingdom to God, even the Father, when he will have abolished all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

Satan is often depicted as a dragon and serpent (Revelation 12:9), and Isaiah prophesies that God would “kill” the dragon/serpent.

Isaiah 27:1 (WEB) In that day, Yahweh with his hard and great and strong sword will punish leviathan, the fleeing serpent, and leviathan the twisted serpent; and he will kill the dragon that is in the sea.

Another passage believed to apply to Satan is found in Ezekiel 28, where God declares that Satan would be burned to ashes and extinguished from existence, indicating his complete and final destruction.

Ezekiel 28:18-19 (WEB) By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your commerce, you have profaned your sanctuaries. Therefore I have brought out a fire from the middle of you. It has devoured you. I have turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all those who see you. 19 All those who know you among the peoples will be astonished at you. You have become a terror, and you will exist no more.

In Psalm 82, God informs the elohim, the fallen angels that had acted wickedly, that they would perish like mortals.

Psalm 82:1,6-7 (BSB) God presides in the divine assembly; He renders judgment among the gods… 6, I have said, ‘You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High.’ 7 But like mortals you will die, and like rulers you will fall.

In Mark 1:23-24, the unclean spirit worried that Jesus would “destroy/kill” him.

Mark 1:23-24 (WEB) Immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, 24 saying, “Ha! What do we have to do with you, Jesus, you Nazarene? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are: the Holy One of God!”

Revelation poetically describes Satan’s irreversible destruction.

Revelation 20:10 (WEB) The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are also. They will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

While the phrase “tormented day and night forever and ever” suggests ongoing existence, such metaphorical language is commonly used in the Bible to signify complete and irreversible destruction with eternal consequences—a punishment that cannot be undone.

Jude 1:7 (BSB) In like manner, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, who indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, are on display as an example of those who sustain the punishment of eternal fire.

Sodom does not presently burn, yet it serves as a symbol of “eternal fire” because the flames utterly eradicated its existence forever, with no possibility of restoration. Similarly, before God destroyed Edom in 583 BC as alluded to in Malachi 1:1-5, Isaiah prophesied that its land and rivers would turn to pitch and would burn with unquenchable fire day and night forever (Isaiah 34:5,9-11). However, Isaiah also said wild animals would dwell in this land of pitch forever, showing the metaphorical nature of this statement, and it is clear today that the fire ceased long ago. This imagery appears often in the Bible, showing an outcome that cannot be changed.¹

Demons Are Not Exempt

Even if Satan was destroyed, may demons continue to act on his behalf?

Revelation explicitly mentions Satan’s fate, but it implies demons share it too. The lake of fire was prepared for both Satan and his angels.

Matthew 25:41 (WEB) Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels.’

Revelation 12:9 (WEB) The great dragon was thrown down, the old serpent, he who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him… 12 Woe to the earth and to the sea, because the devil has gone down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has but a short time.

Even demons feared their fate, anticipating torment in the lake of fire.

Matthew 8:29 (BLB) “And behold, they [demon-possessed men] cried out saying, ‘What to us and to you Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?'”

The Time of Judgment

It’s natural to wonder whether, according to the Bible, demons have already been extinguished or if their destruction is still pending, leaving them free to operate in the present day. The Scriptures indicate that significant end-time events converge at the time of the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11-15). This period aligns with the second resurrection, unprecedented distress (Daniel 12:1-4), Satan’s defeat (Revelation 20:7-10), Christ’s return (Matthew 25:31-45), the inheritance of all nations by God (Revelation 11:15-19), and the establishment of the kingdom of heaven (Revelation 11:15-19; 21:7; Daniel 7:9-27). Prophetic time statements and historical records suggest that this event occurred in 66 AD, within the timeframe promised by Jesus (Matthew 24:34).

Supporting this, other scriptures affirm that this was also the time when all demons were destroyed.

• Matthew 8:29 indicates demons acknowledging a predetermined time for their torment.
• Jude 1:6 mentions angels being kept in bonds for the “judgment of the great day.”
• 2 Peter 2:4-5 speaks of angels cast into darkness awaiting judgment.

Moreover, Jesus links the casting out of demons to the arrival of God’s kingdom (Matthew 12:28).

Psalm 82 predicts the demise of fallen angels alongside God’s judgment and inheritance of all nations.

Psalm 82:6-8 (WEB) I said, “You are gods, all of you are sons of the Most High. 7 Nevertheless you shall die like men, and fall like one of the rulers.” 8 Arise, God, judge the earth, for you inherit all of the nations.

Additionally, Zechariah prophesies the cessation of evil spirits in the generation after Christ’s crucifixion, resulting in no more false prophets (Zechariah 12:10; 13:1-2; John 19:35-37).

Zechariah 13:2 (JST) And it was in that day, says Jehovah of armies, I will cut off the names of the images from the land, and they shall be remembered no more: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

Note: A comparison of Luke 8:31, Mark 5:10, 2 Peter 2:4, and Zechariah 13:2 in the Hebrew](https://biblehub.com/text/zechariah/13-2.htm) makes it clear that the “unclean spirit [passing] out of the land” refers to them being cast into the abyss to await judgment.

In summary, Scripture consistently points to the complete destruction of Satan and his angels at the Great White Throne Judgment in the first century.

A Note on Magic

Many people firmly believe that magic exists today, viewing it as undeniable evidence of Satan’s continued presence. However, a closer look at Revelation suggests that magic could persist in the new heavens and new earth, even in the absence of Satan.

Revelation 21:7-8 (WEB) He who overcomes, I will give him these things. I will be his God, and he will be my son. 8 But for the cowardly, unbelieving, sinners, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their part is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Revelation 22:14-15 (WEB) Blessed are those who do his commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter in by the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

One potential interpretation of the above passages suggests that since sorcerers remain outside the New Jerusalem, their continued existence and condemnation is implied.

The Bible provides scant information about magic, leaving room for speculation about its nature and origin. Some may theorize that magic operates independently of Satan, perhaps as an exploitation of spiritual laws by which Satan once operated for his evil designs. However, such speculations lie beyond the confines of scripture. Nonetheless, the prophecy of Satan’s ultimate demise while sorcery persists suggests a distinction between the two.

Not a Cause For Alarm

However, regardless of the validity of this interpretation, it’s worth noting that this shouldn’t be a cause of alarm for Christians, as magic and sorcery have no power over God’s kingdom.

Deuteronomy 23:4-5 (WEB) because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. 5 Nevertheless Yahweh your God wouldn’t listen to Balaam, but Yahweh your God turned the curse into a blessing to you, because Yahweh your God loved you.

Balaam was a powerful sorcerer hired to curse Israel. However, even he admitted it was impossible to curse God’s people, and that attempting to do so would invite destruction.

Numbers 23:8 (WEB) How shall I curse whom God has not cursed?

Numbers 23:23 (BSB) For there is no spell against Jacob and no divination against Israel. It will now be said of Jacob and Israel, ‘What great things God has done!’

Numbers 24:9 (WEB) Everyone who blesses you is blessed. Everyone who curses you is cursed.

Christians were grafted into Israel by faith (Romans 11:19-23) and inherit this protection. There is no more curse, and magic therefore cannot be used to harm a Christian.

Revelation 22:2-3 (WEB) The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 There will be no curse any more.

It’s worth considering alternative interpretations of Revelation 21:7-8 and 22:14-15, which suggest the cessation of magic. One may argue that when these passages were written, sorcery was still practiced, making the warning applicable to sorcerers at that time. However, it’s proposed that shortly thereafter when Christ returned, all magic ceased. Early church father Ignatius supported a similar view, asserting that Christ eradicated all forms of magic during his earthly ministry:

Hence every kind of magic was destroyed, and every bond of wickedness disappeared; ignorance was removed, and the old kingdom abolished, God Himself being manifested in human form for the renewal of eternal life (The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians Chapter 19 – Shorter version).

Perhaps Ignatius had evidence that magic was no longer operating as it had in the recent past. Whatever the truth of the matter may be, I pray God reveals it clearly and grants peace of mind.

Alternative Explanations

Scripture offers more natural explanations for phenomena often attributed to Satan today:

• The continued presence of sin and evil in the world does not demand Satanic activity. James 1:14-15 and Galatians 5:19-21 teach that temptation arises from our own selfish desires rather than solely from external demonic influence.
• Although some individuals may worship Satan today, they do so in ignorance, as even idol worshippers in the past favored gods who didn’t exist. In Isaiah 44:14-20, God mocks men who fashion idols from the same wood they use for firewood, bowing down to something they themselves created, unable to see the futility of their actions.
• Though there is debate about whether magic will continue to exist, Revelation 22:15 suggests that magic operates independently of Satan and therefore does not necessitate Satan’s existence.

Paranormal experiences reported today may also have alternative, non-paranormal explanations. Psychologist Chris French, known for his work in anomalistic psychology, explores scientific interpretations of such phenomena. His research attributes many experiences to psychological factors, including cognitive biases, misjudgments of probability, the Barnum effect, cold reading, top-down processing, and pareidolia. Conclusion

Despite widespread beliefs about demonic influence in modern times, a careful examination of scripture suggests that these activities cannot be attributed to Satan. Even with the limited information available in the Bible about Satan and demons, the consistent message is their final and complete defeat with no continued influence. Additionally, both Scripture and psychological research provide natural explanations for phenomena often linked to Satan, offering a more grounded perspective.

The scriptures are clear: Christians no longer need to fear Satan’s lingering influence in the world today.
